THE PRACTICE
Benevolent Instruction (BI) is a gentle, guided movement practice for anyone interested in physically engaging with language in the moment. In a given session, audio recorded directives or prompts are offered that lead the practitioner through various tasks, images, ideas, physical states and action potentials.
While prompts offer a structure for the experience, ultimately the practitioner chooses how to physically engage with the provided language based on their own needs and curiosity.
The intention of BI is to provide an opportunity for people to listen and translate their own bodily experience as well as enjoying the presence of a supportive community where movement, language, listening, responding, creating, and sharing are valued.
THE HISTORY
Benevolent Instruction began as a long-distance, text-based, digital-penpal practice that the co-creators began when they were no longer living in the same state but still wanted to share dances with each other. It has evolved into a method of crafting audio scripts that serve as improvisational/compositional instructions or suggestions that allow the listener to dive into the kinesthetic directives; manifest movement from the conceptual, metaphorical imagery; explore in a meditative state; make movement choices; design response possibilities; reformulate whatever definition of dance they have in their mind.

THE PODCAST
Choreographers and movement educators Mina Estrada and CoCo Loupe create and curate weekly audio scripts of curious and kind movement instructions that allow the listener to move, imagine, play, meditate, dance, create and discover the joys and mysteries of inhabiting benevolent worlds that you build right there in the moment.
Call it guided meditation or facilitated improvisation or structured playtime… it is all of this. Created by dancing humans (us!) but made for everyone, Benevolent Instruction is meant to create space and opportunity for all of us to be active, creative and vitally productive.

Special thanks to our dearest colleagues, Nicole Garlando and Noelle Chun for continuing to be a part of this practice, its development and its facilitation.
They work with us on a weekly basis and are Benevolent Instruction writers, practitioners and community moderators. We look forward to having them on future episodes as we dig deeper into this work!
